Insuring a Healthy Future

“Where health care is concerned, what appears to be the simple solution because it saves money in the short run isn’t always best or most cost-efficient over time,” MECEP’s Associate Director Garrett Martin cautions in his latest column in MaineBiz: Insuring a Healthy Future.

Martin analyzes the downside of proposed abolishment of the Dirigo Health Agency, allowing individuals to purchase insurance out-of-state, and challenging the Affordable Care Act in court.  “Eliminating the Dirigo Health Agency and weakening important consumer protections … is not the answer.”

Instead, Martin suggests that “[m]aximizing opportunities presented by the Affordable Care Act and building on existing investments in our health infrastructure would better serve Maine’s people and economy.”

To demonstrate that Mainers strongly support the Affordable Care Act, on Monday, January 10th, MECEP and the other members of the Maine Can Do Better coalition will hold a 10:00 a.m. rally in the Hall of Flags at the Maine State House in Augusta.  In the meantime, click here to send an e-postcard to Governor LePage and Attorney General Schneider to urge them not to join a lawsuit seeking to overturn the Affordable Care Act.
